Our legislative priorities

New Mexico current law fails victims of childhood sexual abuse. Victims of childhood sexual abuse endure unimaginable horrors in secret and suffer lifelong physical, financial, and psychological consequences. They deserve to access justice through civil court and hold the perpetrator and the entity that the perpetrator hid behind.

In the 2026 Legislative Session, we will be fighting to pass the New Mexico Survivors Justice Act, which will provide:

Accountability for those who cause harm

Healing has no end date and neither should accountability. Current law creates a stopwatch for survivors to disclose the abuse. The barriers created for disclosing childhood sexual abuse should not stop wrongdoers from being held responsible. The facts of the abuse and that it caused the psychological injuries must still be proven to a jury.

Access to justice for survivors

Childhood sexual abuse has a lifetime impact. Our laws must be updated to offer hope to New Mexico children that they will never be deprived of the chance to seek justice for the abuse they suffered.

Make New Mexico a model for justice

New Mexico was once a leader in child protection efforts through its civil Statute of Limitations. We've since fallen behind. Thirty-two U.S. states or territories have more victim-focused civil statutes of limitations than New Mexico. Why should victims have fewer rights just because they live here?
